Mike Mentzer Workout

Did Mike Mentzer really use Heavy Duty Training methods to get so big?

As a young man Mike Mentzer met Arthur Jones, who was promoting high intensity training and Nautilus bodybuilding equipment. From Arthur Jones' teachings, Mentzer evolved his Heavy Duty training philosophy, which was based on brief but very intense workouts.

The results?

In 1976, Mentzer won the IFBB Mr. America, and in 1978, he won the heavyweight class at the IFBB World Amateur Championships with a perfect score. In 1979 he placed second to Frank Zane at the IFBB Mr. Olympia. In 1980, he reached a peak of 225 lbs of ripped up and rock solid muscle at only 5'8" tall. Many people feel Mentzer should have won the 1979 and 1980 Mr. Olympia contests.

After Mike retired from bodybuilding, he became a personal trainer and he even trained Dorian Yates with high intensity training. Yates went on to win the Mr. Olympia six times, from 1992 to 1997. Sadly in 2001, Mike Mentzer died; he had a history of heart disease in his family.
